Winter Things

It is that time of year again where we need mitts and toques and all that warm stuff.  I have extra knitted mitts in the classroom in case anyone's get too wet, but it would be a good idea to send an extra pair just in case.

We are using our reusable shopping bags to keep all our loose winter belongings in (mitts, scarves, ski/slush pants, toques  etc.).  We use these bags to keep everything organized and contained in the lockers especially in the lockers that are shared.  If you have not sent a large reusable shopping bag, with your child's name in in, please send on in as soon as possible.  Thank you.

Solving Problems and Math Games

Today we started learning about different ways we can solve problems.  We used puppets to act out different problems that the students have encountered (name calling, pushing, being bossy, not following the rules, not listening, etc.) and then we discussed ways that we could solve the problem and how someone feels when they have a problem.  We will be exploring this concept through shared reading with big books and little books.  The children really enjoyed acting with the puppets.

Math games are a great way to practice number skills.  Today we played Go Fish with our ten frame cards.  This is something you can do at home with a regular deck of cards, taking out the face cards.  This game helps with developing visual number recognition for what each number looks like (how much it is).  War is another great game for practicing number skills of more and less along with number recognition.  When we play this game at school, we will call the game Face Off.  Once we learn some other games, I will post information on how to play them, so you can practice at home too.

To date, we have learned the letters C, D, A, and G.  Our next letter will be P.  When we learn a new letter, we learn it's name, it's sound, how to print it, how to find it in text, along with an action song and rhyme.  Sometimes we will watch a video to go with the letter on You Tube from the Have Fun Teaching channel.  They have made videos for each letter.

Fire Prevention Week

Some of the things we did to learn about Fire Prevention at school:
 - watched a video about fire safety
 - practiced Stop, Drop, and Roll
 - practiced crawling to a door and checking if it is hot before opening the door
 - toured the school looking for fire extinguishers, fire hoses, fire alarms, and exit signs
 - learned about creating a fire escape plan at home and talked about the fire drills we have at school
 - toured the Springside fire hall and saw the fire truck with the siren and lights on
 - discussed when to phone 9-1-1
 - paper and pencil activities about Stop, Drop, and Roll, fire escape plan, and learning 9-1-1 (the rest of the pages sent home can be completed and kept at home)

Some things you can do at home to learn about fire prevention:
 - create fire escape plan and practice it with your family
 - test fire alarms so children know what they sound like
 - look for fire alarms, fire extinguishers, etc.
 - practice learning important personal information: phone number(s), address

What else can you think of to learn about fire prevention??? Leave a comment with your suggestions. (I have to moderate them after you submit them, so it will take time before your comment is visible on the blog)

Next Week

Next Week is Fire Prevention Week.   We will learn about fire safety and take a tour of the Springside fire hall on Tuesday.  Also happening on Tuesday is lunch with the Principal.  Mr. K and Ms Schultz will eat lunch with the class and the school will provide lunch for everyone (hot dogs and apple crisp).  Mr. K does this with all the classes throughout the year.  Please still send a snack.
September and October are our "Caring" months in our Caught You Caring program.  We will be discussing ways to show caring and students that demonstrate caring in school will receive an award.  There are 5 awards in total that a student can earn in Kindergarten to Grade 2.  We take 2 months to focus on each award.
Remember.... Thursday is early dismissal day.  Students get picked up at 11:30.  Please still send a snack that day.  In the afternoon the staff has a staff meeting and we meet in our Professional Learning Committees (PLC).

New Items on the blog

There are 2 new things on the right hand side.  There is a place where you can enter your email address to follow the blog by email, and there is a Vote For Me widgit that will take you to my mom's quilt where you can vote daily until the 21st.  I normally wouldn't add personal things to this blog, but my mom is in the final round and is the last Canadian in the professional category.  She has been working on this challenge for almost a year because she has had to design 3 quilts before this one.
