Blog Classroom Contest

Begining in the new year, I will be posting a weekly question or task about something that has been posted on the blog. Check the blog out with your child and send the answer to school with them on a slip of paper. At the end of each month, I will have a draw for a gift certificate for a free book from a book order.

More information will come home with your child when school resumes. This contest is for Springside Kindergarten children only.

Building Homes

During the month of November, we were learning about different types of homes. Animal homes, human homes, homes of the past and different cultures. During this process, we were also learning about different shapes used to build homes. We did different activities around constructions - building with toothpicks and marshmallows, sugar cubes, and boxes. We even tried using modelling clay. Following is a video of the process of building homes. Many of the groups used picture books as a "blueprint" for building their homes. The children also incorporated what we were learning into their play when they used the blocks and lego. One pair of students took an etch-a-scetch and drew a design of a building they wanted to build, then they made it from the wooden blocks.

What's Happening....

I am not sure what is wrong with the calendar on the Blog. I am looking into why all the dates are moved over. They are not like that when I go directly to the calendar. Oh, the joys of working with technolgy.

We will be making gingerbread men this week. Monday we will make the dough, Wednesday we will roll it out and bake it, and Friday we will decorate them. If you have a rolling pin or gingerbread boy/girl cookie cutters at home, could you please send them to school on Wednesday. Also, I need everyone to send in some items to decorate the cookies with. I will bring the icing. Any small candies or licorice would be great. Remember: Nut Free

Your child will be bringing home many notes on Monday. Please take a look at them.

Halloween Carnival

Making Numbers with Pumpkin Seeds

We carved a pumpkin and washed the seeds to use in a Math activity. We used a five frame to show numbers up to 5 with pumpkin seeds.

November Activities

We have moved on the the Big Idea of Homes. We will be learning about many different types of homes, animals, people, etc. We are also integrating 3D shapes into this idea, so we will be doing a variety of construction activities with the different shapes. The children all are very excited about the new ideas and play areas in the classroom. They have even had some input into what should go in each area.

Thank you for sending all the boxes and containers in. I think we have enough for our constructions, but cereal boxes can still be sent in. Also any containers in the shapes of cubes, cones, or pyramids would be useful as those are more difficult to find.

Getting Ready for Fall

We have been really enjoying the warm weather lately. Today we went looking for leaves. We were looking for leaves of different colours, shapes, and sizes. When we got back to the classroom, we learned how to do leaf rubbings using the leaves we found. The leaves are now in our new sensory table. Along with the leaves, the students may have collected some bugs. At play time, the cchildren have been taking turns playing with the leaves and looking for any bugs. Here are some pictures from today:

What We Have Been Doing...

The past few days of Kindergarten have flown by. We have been busy learning many new things and making new friends. We have now learned 2 letters, cookie C and dog with a tail D. We call these letters these names because it helps us remember what they look like. We have also been working on sorting and patterning with a variety of objects. We used apples to sort and make patterns. Later we washed the apples and made our own apple sauce and apple juice with them. Everyone tried both the applesauce and the apple juice. Most of the children even tried cinnamon in thier applesauce. We compared how 3 different kinds of apples tasted and felt in our mouths. Then we chose a favourite apple and we used the SMART Board to see which apple was everyones favourite.

Our first Hot Lunch was on Tuesday. We have another one on Wednesday. Make sure to get your order forms in on Monday.

Towers

The last topic we were learning about in Math was Shapes. Do you remember sending all those boxes and containers to school??

Well, one of the uses of the containers was to hold our Dinosaur dioramas. Then, we took as many as possible and made towers with them.

The class was divided into partners. They were given a roll of masking tape and a challenge: who can build the highest tower?

The groups were left to do some problem solving: how to get the tape off the roll, how to get the tape to stick without getting all bunched up, how to get the towers to stand, how to get the towers taller after they were taller than they were, etc.

With very little help from myself, they figured out all the answers themselves. Scissors were used for the tape, one person held it while the other person cut it. Tape was stuck to the boxes before cutting it. One person held the boxes while the other person put the tape on.

The solutions for making the towers taller were very creative. One group thought of a chair, so I modified the challenge to exclude chairs for safety reasons. Another group thought of lifting their partners, that didn't work so well. The successful solutions included making two towers and putting them together, getting bigger boxes and sliding them under, and asking for help.

After the towers were completed, the children created representations of their towers using pre-cut shapes. They all did an awesome job of matching the shapes they saw in the boxes and having the same number of shapes as they did boxes.

St. Patrick's Day

I finally downloaded the pictures and videos from my camera. So, here is what we have been doing since March.

On St. Patrick's day, a sneaky leprechaun came into out classroom and moved things around. many thought it was me, but it wasn't :)

February is Flying . . .

I hope everyone had a relaxing Family Day and Winter Break!

This month has just about zoomed right by us. We have had many fun things happening during the last 2 weeks of school. We have gone skating several times at the rink, we had Jump Rope For Heart at the rink as well. The children had a fantastic day doing a variety of jump rope activities. We have a hospital now in our classroom, so the children are giving out bandages, wrapping arms in casts, using a stethoscope, as well as a variety of other objects found in a hopital. We are learning a bit about the parts of our body (arms, legs, feet, etc.) and face (mouth, eyes, etc.) and about our feelings. Today we are making a book about our feelings.

Next month, we will be learning about Dinosaurs. We are finishing up our unit on numbers up to 5 and will be moving on to Geometry and Measurement in Math. So far we have learned the letters F, Q, D, G, S, A, O, T, C, E, L, J, I, and K. Please keep the letter stories at home to practice reading with your child.

Welcome Back to School!

I hope that everyone had a wonderful Christmas vacation spent with family and friends!

We are back into the full swing of things again. We started learning about the letter 'e' this week and we are working on our numbers 0-5 right now. There have been many changes in our classroom. The children are sitting with different classmates at their tables. Things have moved around so that we can access the SMART board. We now do all of our circle time activities on the SMART board. The children have been learning to use it during play time also. They have taken to using the SMART board like fish to water and they all seem pretty excited to get their hands on it. I will be posting pictures soon of our classroom, but if you would like to pop in and see how the SMART board works, we do Circle Time from 8:30 to 9:15 approximately. Just let me know if you are coming, you are more than welcome to come in. Typically Play Time is right before lunch, if you want to come in and play with the SMART board with your child, just let me know in advance and you are more than welcome to come.

We will be learning about winter, the things you do in winter and snow this month. I also talked to the children about some of their interests and many of them will be covered at some point throughout the year. There was one area that I hadn't planned on covering this year, but since there seemed to be and interest in it, we will also be learning about SPACE this month instead of animals. So if you get a chance, take an opportunity to stop and look at the stars with you child.
